Apple Picking

Members of the Central Ontario Region enjoyed a brisk fall afternoon at the Birtchfield Farms, Woodstock Ontario.  Margie Grant and Maryanne, Ed and Bev Baker with their puppy Teddy, Wendy Prior with Teddy's sister Madison and Marian and Darren Shoemaker with Chelsea posed for pictures with the pumpkins and in front of the wagon that greeted us the entrance to the farm.  All wandered around the orchard and greeted the many people who were there with the children, picking apples and buying their Halloween pumpkin.

Basic Control Workshop - Part 2

The C.O.R. held their second basic obedience workshop for 2009 on Sunday September 13 in Acton Ontario. This time we had ten Newfoundlands from thirteen weeks of age to adults attend. The sun was shone brightly and a beautiful breeze welcomed one and all. This has been the best weather we in Ontario has had all summer. Our instructor, Tara Brown patiently and expertly showed the owners how to work with their dogs on a daily basis to reach their goal of having a companion Newfoundland that they can feel comfortable taking anywhere with them. The dogs enjoyed her fun method of positive training and all worked hard to please their owners. Over the lunch break we all enjoyed a pot luck lunch and had time to talk about all we had learned in the morning. Tara answered any and all the questions we could think of. The day ended with all the participants receiving a graduation certificate for the owners, goodies for the dogs and an invite to the Water Rescue Dog Test on September 26, where they would see Newfoundlands putting into practice basic obedience and their water skills. Many thanks to Tara for sharing her expertise and her commitment to the breed and to the C.O.R.

Water Rescue Dog Workshop

The Central Ontario Region held their annual Water Rescue Dog Workshop on June 20 & 21 at Earl Rowe Provincial Park in Alliston Ontario.  Most of the dogs were anxious to get to beach and swim, but our instructors Roger and Barbara Frey of Alden, New York insisted on some ground work first.  Rain on Saturday made some of the training a little more difficult as the owners and their Newfs worked in our pavilion.

After a great Pot Luck Lunch, all did get down to beach, were everyone got wet, either in the water or in the pouring rain.  Little puppies and full grown Newfs made a valiant effort to prove to their owners they were true water dogs.

Sunday was just a perfect day for water training, warm and sunny.  Again, the day began with some more land training and Roger and Barb presented a demonstration of a trained Water Rescue Dog at work.  Their Newfoundland Marshall, wowed the audience with his abilities.  Following another great Pot Luck lunch it was back to the water again, where all the dogs got to ride on the boat and practice all the things they had learned over the two days.

We had 30 Newfoundlands entered this year from all over Central Ontario and one who had traveled from Thunder Bay to learn the basics of Water Rescue Dog training.  We are following this weekend with four more weekly training sessions at Guelph Lake.  Many Thanks to our instructors for the weekend, Roger and Barb, whose light hearted way of training make everyone feel at ease and make all the lessons fun for all.

Basic Control Workshop

April 26th, 2009 ~ Acton, ON

Under soggy skies, 12 Newfies and their families braved the chilly mist and fog to attend the COR's basic obedience seminar on April 26th.  The seminar, taught by Tara Brown, covered a 6-week basic training course in one day!  Those Newfies were put to work!  Basic commands, attention training, the stay, loose-leashing walking and the recall were all introduced using fun and positive methods.  The seminar ended with the participants gathered into teams and various games were played to test the skills they had learned.  The winning team included Rufus and the Gibbon family, Finlay and Glenn, and Miller and Mellissa.  A great pot luck lunch was enjoyed halfway through that refueled the participants.

A big thanks to our Working Dog Chair Lynda McFadden and our Membership Secretary Margie Grant who organized the event, Tara Brown for teaching, Angie and Martin DeBruyn for the use of their farm and kitchen and Marian and Darren Shoemaker for their help with lunch.

Another obedience workshop will be held September 13th for those who could not attend our Spring workshop.
